Grass track racing is a bit like speedway but in a field. It's done on a roughly oval circuit, not necessarily on the flat, and is usually considerably longer than a speedway track. The riding technique is somewhat similar and many of the top grass track riders are involved in speedway at a high level too.

One very noticeable difference is that grass track includes races for sidecars. Now, if you think hurtling around a field at break-neck speed on a motorbike is crazy, you should see these guys! You wouldn't get me on one of these machines for love nor money, and the people who race them have my utmost admiration.

My interest in this sport is purely a photographic one. It certainly provides plenty of opportunity for action shots, though the mud, dust, and occasional stones flying off the track are a big concern when wielding expensive photographic equipment. It pays to learn early on when to duck or turn your back.
